Two weeks later, the cat story finally ends. I'd write out the entire story, but I can't be bothered, so in short:

I CAN HAS A KITTY.

Tine's been taking screenshots on the webcam. :)

I'll probably do nothing but post pictures of her for the next few months, now. ^_^

I do prefer the term 'yarnstorming', though

In the aftermath of my very temporary cat ownership, before I decided to track the cat down, I tried to distract myself by going out yarnbombing.

and took pictures even!Collapse )

It's made of 26 strips of hairpin lace, joined together. They were all made from the same skein, which had an appropriately long color change: I just joined the strips as I made them, and they're pretty much all different colors!

The tassels, such as they are, are made from the silver yarn I used for the weeping angel I made for Tine a couple of weeks ago. I think all that yarn will be dedicated to yarnbombing, because I have no idea what else to do with it. XD

Today, a tale of inevitability. (But not really.)

When I came home from work on Tuesday evening, the weather was disgusting with cold and rain and win, and I wanted nothing more than to go home to my girlfriend, who was incidentally going back to her native Germany the next morning.

Near the entrance of the building was a cat. Not a kitten, but smallish, black and white. Drenched. Freezing. Miserable. Looking at me with its piteous kitty eyes.

My heart broke, but I walked past, and climbed the three flights of stairs to my flat. Where Tine, who'd come home two hours before me, asked "is the cat still there?" And lo, my heart broke again. But it seemed to be waiting under someone's window, and we hoped the owner would come home and pick it up.

Much like Titanic, everyone knows how the story ends, but it's the journey that matters.Collapse )

Great Crochet Project, aka Project WAINW (don't ask), is well underway! And could even be said to be 50% done, although I suspect that 35% is closer to the truth. But for now, behold Milo Dunstan:

More pictures here. Soon there will be Liam. And Jojo. And outfits, and then I'll be the crazy person making them take poses in public places and cackling madly as I take terrible pictures.

Meanwhile I haven't commented on the comic for about two weeks because I'm a terrible person.

My name is Drae.

I can't tell you my last name, or where I live.

Believe me, I'd like nothing more than to tell you all those things. It would mean that the war is over, that the Yeerks have been defeated and humanity is finally free.

But I can't. They would find me, and then they'd find my friends, and all would be lost.

Humanity would be lost.

Or I could be hiding my identity because I'm worried about internet axe murdering stalkers, but it's nicer to pretend I can turn into animals.Collapse )

Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes, by Daina Taimina
I've been eyeing this book for a while, but ended up buying it as a whim, as with most books. It came in the mail today and I took it into my bath and OH MY GOD I AM IN LOVE. Non-Euclidean geometry and crochet and M.C. Escher, all rolled into pretty pages with nice pictures and also OH WOW SLUGS CAN ACTUALLY BE PRETTY WITH ALL THE COLORS. ♥ (I am not so coherent when I love something, you may have noticed.)

Also, the latest TOY strip led to this, because apparently I had nothing better to do on Saturday.

Started a Great Crochet Project a couple of days ago, and am already getting crochetblocked. How, I ask you, how does Ravelry not have a single cat pattern that allows me to make a cat that looks the way I want? Isn't the internet made for kittens? FFFFFFFF

Well. Until I become so frustrated with this that I just decide to wing it, meet Billy.Collapse )

And until I can get to making more progress on this project:

DO ALL THE THINGS!

In other news, my parents have sort-of plans to come watch Apocalypse Now on my TV tomorrow, which means I need to clean up. But Windup & Pitch is live and also the MIKA live concert DVD I'd completely forgotten I ordered three weeks ago arrived in the mail and I kind of. Hmm.

Maybe I can do some ironing while watching it. That counts as tidying up, right? Also, it'll allow me to dance around in my new 'Blame it on the boys' t-shirt. So that could work.

(I should specify that I've been listening to Mika pretty much nonstop for about a month. While I discovered him for a reason that's both perfectly transparent and terribly embarrassing, I do love his music. It's been keeping me upbeat in the morning, and heavens know I need that to face the day.)

It doesn't hurt that he's gorgeous. Hence the DVD.

So. Leering at Mika Ironing. Then WU&P. Then crocheting. Dishes. And then other fun stuff.

Good times ahead. >D

Pimp post: Tripping Over You
fade into the background
factorielle
A couple of months ago, Kori made a rec posts of gay webcomics, which included one I immediately fell in love with. As in, from the fifth page or so.

Tripping Over You is a love story that addresses the awkwardness that comes from having feelings for someone you shouldn't - especially in the odd mix of drama and humor that is secondary boarding school. source

The best thing about this comic is that while it's mostly about the main pairing and their relationship, it's not only about them. They don't exist in a vacuum: they have issues and responsibilities and friends that don't involve each other, and those still need to be dealt with. Sharing a kiss or two isn't the express road to Happily Ever After And Who Cares About The Rest Of The World.

Also, I am forever in love with the way Suzana shows intonation with speech bubbles.

This is the part where I ramble and post pictures. Somewhat spoilery, but remember: it's all about the storytelling.Collapse )

And the best part? It's not even a hundred pages yet, so it won't take you long to read it all!

So I made those big plans according to which I was going to start posting on the internet again this year, which isn't quite the same as developing an actual social life but it's not like I. You know. Like people IRL. So this is a good start.

I wanted to make myself start with the special snowflake challenge, which lasted all of one post. It's now the 6th of January and I have no desire to play catch-up. So there. But I wanted to post more, so. Starting with this:

A 'love' letter to slash fandom (with character names cunningly changed).Collapse )

But why *Saiyuki*?
fade into the background
factorielle
I've been in fandom for about twelve years in one way or another, and for a good long while I was a serial monofandomist. One thing caught my interest, and held it. All previous loves stopped mattering. I dedicated all my fannish energy to this New Thing, only going back to previous ones on occasion to read someone else's hard work. (Oh, yeah. For me, fandom is 70% about fic, 30% about squeeing with other people.)

And then, about three years ago, I fell in love.Collapse )

Then a couple of weeks ago I was wandering on the AO3, went to the list of fandoms, and lo, in the Animanga section, there was Saiyuki and I thought 'hey, it's been a while but I probably remember enough of the basic plot to be able to read fic in there and there's a lot of it, so why not?'

A while: understatement. The first season of the Saiyuki series is the first DVD box I ever bought, something like eight years ago. I bought (and watched) the second season not long after, and that was pretty much that, aside from desperate attempts to find something to read on FFN way back then.

And then, I experienced the falling again. Suddenly I had to Read All The Fic, Inhale All The Canon. I watched the DVDs I had, downloaded Reload, Gunlock and Burial, and read the manga online while the anime was downloading. (As a result I am extremely confused about what event happens when in which canon. But I'll get better.)

And then I caught myself thinking, what if??

Cue the basis for That One FicCollapse )

So there I am. And the question has been asked of this: but why Saiyuki? The animation is so horrible!

It truly is, but.Collapse )

There already is a Girl With The Dragon Tattoo movie. And it's a good one, too!

Just because it wasn't made in Hollywood doesn't mean it should be discounted. :(

Started reading The Hunger Games this morning.

Finished reading it (first book) about twenty minutes ago.

So. Yeah.

All I can say if that if ever I reach that dream of being a published writer, this is the kind of book I want to have written. Because sure, the writing gets stilted and I think the research on some stuff is shaky, but those things don't even come close to mattering. Not in that world, not in those settings, because the only thing that's of any importance is and then what?

Now off to bed. With a cup of tea, and Catching Fire. Man, am I glad I bought the three books together.

So, there's this post I've been promising to make since February, but I'm a bad person and life has somehow managed to take over my LJ/DW time lately, BUT.

PARIS KOUSHIEN 2012

... is still a go.

For those of you, dear friends, who missed the first round for a reason or another, I'm planning a fannish free-for-all at my place next May. This is your chance to visit Paris without having to pay through the nose for a hotel and restaurants! And other things.

Now that we're only a year away it's time for some actual serious planning, with dates and that kind of stuff that I'm terrible at. So tell me, people! Are you coming? What are your plans?

Drae: And why all these people try to talk to me for no reason anyway? In the subway a dude just came over and started talking to me, what the hell?
Tine: Yeah, you think they'd get the message, when you're staring at your screen with earphones on top... *takes a sip from teacup*
Drae: Well, to be fair, I wasn't staring at a screen. Or listening to music. I was running some porn in my head.
Tine: *tries not to choke*
Drae: *seriously* Swallow, sweetie. That's what he did.

There's a post (this is only one of the many reposts) going around on Tumblr which encapsulates my issue with the anti-rape discourse I see all over the place.

Yeah, I know. I don't post for three months, and when I do it's unpopular opinions about sexual assault. Uhm, hi guys?

Shopping!
fade into the background
factorielle
Everyone who's had the misfortune of watching me try to pick an outfit for something will know that I am not a shoe person. Alas, the only pairs I've had to wear this winter are an 18-months-old, beaten down pair of sneakers and stiletto boots. And stilettos on snow and ice? Nooooot.

So I decided I needed new shoes, which prompted Tine to say "oh and then you can throw these away *beam*", so she was pretty involved in this quest. She took me to her go-to shoe shop in Cologne, and in the window I glimpsed...Collapse )

And that was the painless end of shoe shopping for me yesterday. :)
